It's genocide says Daan Smit of Belfast, who's happy to be alive with his family. He, wife Fiona and son Christo were attacked by three black men in their Belfast home for only reason: to murder them in their beds, he says. The attack occurred on the politically-relevant day of December 16, 2012: the Afrikaners' Day of The Vow, when they commemmorate the Battle of Blood River against the Zulus.Daan was first attacked by a man with a shogun-knife during the 2am Sunday-morning attack. The blade broke off in his arm with the first stab, he said.And the spanner he was bashed with nearly felled him but he realised that if he fell, 'my wife and child would die'. Fiona screamed while she saw the three men at the foot of their bed and Daan said his 'defence force instincts kicked in because he jumped from the bed and fought back with his bare hands after the first stab.After his fierce defence the attackers - who had broken in through a bathroom window - crawled by out by the same route and fled, grabbing Daan's cellphone on the way out. Other than that, nothing was 'robbed'. "I tried to pull the third guy back into the house as he crawled out the window but one of his mates bashed at me with the spanner.'Meanwhile young Christo brought his father's pistol from the gunsafe and Daan fired off several shots to encourage the men to keep running - before he collapsed. He was taken to hospital by ambulance while Fiona and Christo waited for the SAPS to arrive.   By Hassan Isilow - Townships in the Western and Eastern Cape were known to be the most hostile towards foreign nationals, but the trend seems to have changed, with Gauteng coming in the lead.A mini-survey conducted by Channel Islam International, reveals that more attacks are happening in Bloemfontein and Gauteng provinces. Last month, a dozen Malawian and Zimbabwean nationals were attacked in their shacks in Orange Farm, south of Johannesburg.According to activists working with migrants, the foreign nationals were allegedly singled out and attacked in the night.“This was not a robbery because only shacks belonging to foreigners were targeted,” activist Patrick Mazibuko told Cii in an interview.He said 13 foreign nationals were badly beaten and are recovering in hospital. Patrick said a foreign owned business was also robbed in orange farm during the skirmishes.“The problem with some South African citizens is that they believe foreigners take opportunities and services meant for them.” Mazibuko also claimed that SA citizens often use foreigners as a scapegoat for their problems “Whenever government officials fail to deliver services and locals embark on a service delivery protest, they resort to targeting foreign nationals living in their neighbourhoods, and also rob foreign owned businesses near them,” he stated.However, some South Africans whom Cii spoke to in the township believe some foreigners have benefited from the low-cost government housing project (RDPS) and social grants projects.“Some foreigners force us to hate them, because they compete for limited jobs and business opportunities with us. Some of those foreigners have ID’s and pretend to be South African citizens,” an angry Joseph Dube said.When asked how he felt about foreign shopkeepers, Dube said: “‘I hate them because they compete with my brothers the local South African shopkeepers.”But another member of the public, identified only as Lerato, disagrees with Dube. “South Africa is a free economy, let foreign businesses operate. This will give us better services.” She said.Many others Cii spoke to in the township held a similar view as Lerato’s. They believe the existence of foreign shopkeeper’s was good because they sell products in their stores much cheaper compared to local entrepreneurs who had enjoyed a monopoly before the emergence of foreign traders.“If foreigners were not selling cheaper compared to the local entrepreneurs, they wouldn’t be in business. It is simple business logic,” Lerato said.However, despite their good business insight, many foreign traders have paid the price with their lives in venturing into the townships. The Somali Community Board of South Africa (SCOB) reported that over 800 Somali traders have been killed in the country since 2002. An untold number of Bangladeshi and Pakistanis have also suffered similar losses due to business rivalry with envious local entrepreneurs.Efforts to get a comment from the Department of Community Safety were futile, but Cii will continue to follow up on the story.
