ANC-members threatened with job-losses by ruling-party leadership
He was told by residents and the police that ' the whole incident centered around the fact that some of the local ANC-people wanting to attend the big centenary party in Bloemfontein on January 8 2011 were blocked by the non ruling party members from going there….
"The latter were told blatantly by the ruling party leadership that they will not even be considered for any jobs in the municipality."
This angered the locals so much that they torched the municipal income-source derived from tourism: the cultural village.
“Furthermore there were clashes earlier in the day between locals and residents from a nearby town, who were obviously transported into our village to make trouble,” he noted. He said the incident can create a great deal of damage - economically and sociologically. "The roads in and out of Clarens are closed and tourists cannot get into the cultural village. Even the locals cannot reach nearby Bethlehem. Matters can get critical if the trucks with bread, milk and other food cannot access us. Until that time we just bite the bullet.”
Cultural villages are run by provincial governments to create tourist attactions and create jobs for local residents. Only black residents are allowed to work at cultural villages:
